A planned car insurance crackdown from the government will attract strong support among the British public, it has been claimed.
According to a poll from the AA, 69% support the proposals for a new offence to be created for drivers who keep a vehicle without insurance.
The survey found that 75% of women, 64% of men and 43% of 18 to 24-year-olds feel positively towards the reform.
These demographic trends could be explained by the fact that younger drivers tend to pay higher insurance premiums than those in other age groups.
Paul Watters, head of AA Public Affairs, said: “Police already do have and do use powers to confiscate uninsured vehicles on the public highway.
“Under new legislation they will also have the power to issue penalties for offending vehicles that are on private land.”
Current estimates suggest that around 5% of UK drivers do not have car insurance, adding around £30 to the typical annual premium of legitimate insurance customers.
